With the start of World War II, the ship was transferred to the Home Fleet and participated in the Battle of Narvik, where she sank a German destroyer. In 1940, she returned to the Mediterranean Sea and managed to hit the flagship of the Italian fleet during the Battle of Punta Stilo. In 1941, the ship sank two Italian heavy cruisers during the Battle of Cape Matapan. In 1943–1944, the battleship covered the landing of Allied troops in Sicily and Normandy as part of the Eastern Fleet.
