During construction, they received a number of changes and improvements compared to the previous Oriani class, including the installation of a new 120 mm gun and a more reliable propulsion unit. Between 1940 and 1942, Aviere participated in minelaying and conducted patrol and escort missions to Africa. On December 17, 1942, while escorting a convoy to Bizerte, she received a torpedo hit by British submarine HMS Splendid. As a result, she broke in two and sank.
