Before the start of World War II, London served as the flagship of the 1st Cruiser Squadron. During the war, she was involved in the pursuit of the German battleship Bismarck and carried out convoy protection duties in the North Atlantic. Following a refit in 1943, London was assigned to the Eastern Fleet, and when the war came to an end, she served on the China Station.
