She received bulges, reinforced decks, a new superstructure, radar, and a new dual-purpose secondary battery. She returned to service in the Pacific in time for the start of the Battle of Leyte. During the battle, West Virginia delivered several successful hits on battleship Yamashiro and cruiser Mogami. In 1945, the ship took part in the Battle of Iwo Jima and the landings on Okinawa. Over the course of the war, West Virginia was awarded five battle stars.
