During the Sino-Japanese War, she conducted coastal patrols and was involved in the invasion of French Indochina in 1940. During World War II, Shinonome was stationed on Hainan Island, providing cover for the Japanese landings at Kota Bharu in Malaya. Shinonome was sunk in 1941 in the vicinity of Miri, Sarawak, after being struck by two aerial bombs from a Dornier Do 24 Dutch flying boat.
