A large hybrid battleship and a hypothetical option considered for converting a Yamato-class battleship into an aircraft-carrying ship. After the loss of four aircraft carriers at Midway in 1942, Japan found itself in desperate need of new ships of this type. At the same time, the prospect of a classic major engagement between battle fleets was becoming increasingly unlikely. In these circumstances, following the 1944 conversion of the Ise-class ships into hybrid battleships, it was conceivable that more powerful and modern battleships might also have been converted.
