During the interwar period, the French Marine Nationale investigated new capital ship designs to modernize its fleet. Among them was a proposed 37,000-ton battlecruiser armed with twelve 305 mm guns mounted in three quadruple-gun turrets. These ships would have been well-suited to counter the new Italian heavy cruisers. Ultimately, the design was never constructed. If such a ship had been built and survived World War II, she would likely have undergone modernization with updated anti-aircraft armament at the end of the 1940s.
